DJ Spoony is a British garage DJ and presenter. “This is a list of music that has inspired me and that inspires me still,” he tells Apple Music. “They keep me grounded with their quality. There are a couple of records in here that are the personal favourites of my greatest inspiration: my mum. She shaped my taste and interest. Growing up, there were not many black role models that didn’t play sport or were not family members. Music was an area where I felt that not only were we equal but we were ‘allowed’ to be the best. What’s important here is that artists like The Doobie Brothers, Bobby Caldwell, Adele and Justin Timberlake have made amazing ‘black’ music—proving that if prejudices are banished and equality is at the front of our minds, magic can happen.
