Myrkur Essentials

Myrkur Essentials

Although frequently described as a black-metal outfit with folk tendencies, Myrkur are far more complex than that description might lead you to believe. Conceived and driven by vocalist/songwriter Amalie Bruun in the mid-2000s, the Danish group weave together dramatic string swells, spacious arrangements and sonic flourishes in genres far afield from black metal: burnt-sugar shoegaze, velvety classical and piano-augmented gothic rock. Bruun snarls like a possessed demon and trills like an ethereal opera singer, sometimes in the same song—making the experience of listening to Myrkur harrowing but emotionally rewarding.
