Editors' Notes When saxophonist Wayne Shorter joined Miles' quintet in late 1964, the trumpeter locked in one of his best and longest-lasting bands. With Shorter, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams, Miles recorded six albums—from 1964's ESP through 1968's Filles de Kilimanjaro—that are the dazzling, kinetic bridge between post-bop and fusion.
