Mental Well-Being

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau has long been an advocate for well-being—and it partly stems from her experiences outdoors as a kid. “As an only child, I grew up in nature for the first four years of my life before moving to the city,” she tells Apple Music. “Nature and wildlife never felt like a threat. I found solace in them from a very young age.” In facing numerous challenges over the years—growing up around addiction, confronting her own anxiety and eating disorder—she looked to reconnect with nature as a course of healing. “I searched for that sensation of space and freedom I found in forests, mountains, lakes and oceans within me for years to come,” she says. And through therapy and volunteering, and in her work as a public speaker and media host, she’s helped others on their path to mental well-being. To honour World Mental Health Day, Grégoire Trudeau put together a playlist of songs that are both soul-nourishing and inspiring, and she talks us through some of her selections. Serena Ryder, “Candy” “‘Everyone has edges/Build them to survive/But I want to open up/And show you my softer side.’ Serena is an incredible musician and singer and a staunch mental health advocate. I’m lucky to call her a friend.” Imelda May, “11 Past The Hour” “You know when a song just takes you out from a grim moment and takes you to a beautiful place where you can ‘Give me your heart/I’ll hold it with mine/So you can be free/My love.’ I just feel like dancing in the kitchen or being on a mountaintop and twirling, liberated.” LAUREL, “Come Together” “A sensuously potent song. ‘Come together, come together/Do I come to mind?’ I’ve taught a couple of yoga flow sessions to this one for the depth of its rhythm, and I teach a meditative walk to it, as slow as you can go. Presence is slow. For the health of our brains, body and heart, we must learn to slow down.” Patrick Watson, “Here Comes the River” “Canadian talent at its best, from a singer-songwriter’s perspective. His music and lyrics reflect a deep thought process and intelligence. He describes life in difficult moments, like a river sweeping through, and sings how sometimes the obstacle is the way. So much wisdom in this song.” Imagine Dragons, “It’s Ok” “I've always loved the high from listening to Imagine Dragons’ big voices and pounding instrumentals, but I softened while listening to their album Mercury - Acts 1 & 2. With lots of lyrics related to mental well-being: ‘Baby, you’re not broken, just a little bit confused’ is a reminder that all of us are learning to navigate the fog of life and that we are not broken because of it. We are all light seekers.”
