Melanie C: Music That Moves Me

“Exercise is so good for my head,” Melanie C tells Apple Music as she introduces her workout playlist. “I work out just as much for my mood as my body. Feeling strong gives me the confidence to deal with whatever the world throws at me and staying fit means I can still jump around on stage and behind the decks. Music is a massive part of my motivation and plays a huge part in me reaching my fitness goals. It can inspire me to get up and get moving, as well as keeping me going when I need to dig deep and push through.” The Spice Girl and DJ has put together a collection of workout motivators from the ’80s to today, including The Prodigy, Sammy Virji and her very own gym-to-club anthem “Sweat”. “I’ve picked a selection of tracks that I’ll often play in my DJ sets and when I’m working out—a mix of old and new, songs that I know will get a dance floor bouncing and give me the energy and euphoria to achieve a personal best,” she says. “My exercise routine has changed a lot over the years, I used to be a big cardio girl but that has been taken over by strength work and interval training. I love mixing it up and doing a little Pilates and yoga in my routines, as well as getting outside to cycle and run when I can.” As someone who backflipped her way through the Sporty Spice days, Melanie does have some regrets.: “We’re so much more knowledgeable on fitness now than we were in the ’90s—all those hours wasted on the treadmill when I could have been squatting, hip-thrusting and building my booty!” And she has lots of tips if you need a little motivation to start your own fitness routine. “Listen to your body, set achievable goals and find the best activities for you,” she says. “There’s so much variety out there. Finding like-minded people really helps, whether it’s weekend park runs, joining a triathlon club or finding a gym buddy. Exercising can be fun and sociable, but don’t forget recovery.”
