Maya Jane Coles is a one-woman record industry—writing, producing and recording superior deep house and techno with a uniquely molten sonic footprint. “Burning Bright” and “Come Home”, from 2013's Comfort, showcase her mournful side, with cavernous bass and touches of John Barry guitar, while the earlier “Simple Things” and “What They Say” are the welcoming opposite—warm, enveloping beats with light touches of melody. Her natural sense of quiet foreboding also comes out in her remix work, reimagining songs by The xx and Nicki Minaj as hazy, magical dramas.
