Lucy Rose's quiet determination is actually a model of gentle ferocity. Her keening and thoughtful voice is often set against folky guitar strums, clicking beats and reverb (as on 2012's “Shiver”) which lend her songs a sharpness and immediacy, and make her ghostly melodic runs all the more affecting (“Lines”, “Night Bus”). That directness is also apparent in the stripped-back rawness of “Gamble”, proving that she's a keen observer of her own failings, as she calls out her shyness in “Scar” and her propensity for pushing people away in the foreboding, bass-heavy “I Tried”.
