Loyle Carner Essentials

Croydon's Benjamin Coyle-Larner grew up adoring grime but his soulful and reflective hip-hop owes more to boom bap and the conscious quarters of rap's golden age. Despite only being 22 when he released his debut album, 2017's Yesterday's Gone, he rhymes with the wisdom and maturity of a much older, lived-in soul. His measured and wistful flow favours emotional eloquence over bravado, and the only tales from the street that he tells are cautionary ones (“Stars & Shards”). Instead, his soul-baring confessionals discuss family (“Tierney Terrace”), romantic trials (“Mean it in the Morning”) and his struggles with grief, faith and responsibility (“The Isle of Arran”).
