Lala Hsu: Renew Yourself and Nourish Your Inner Child

“In 2021, we altered our lives and perspectives,” Lala Hsu tells Apple Music. “But the standstill of humanity and its world has its benefits. It allowed us to reflect and regain ourselves and ready for a new year.” 2021 was a big year for the Mandopop singer-songwriter, and not just because of the pandemic. She starred as a coach on a talent show, settled into life as a new mother, and stepped away from the slow-burning music she’s known for with a dramatic single, “None of the Above”. And to signify the Year of the Tiger, she’s made a family-friendly playlist for fans—and her toddler—to enjoy. “The thought behind these choices was just that they’re all very good songs,” she says. “That’s the most important thing—music isn’t just good to listen to, it’s something we can have by our side, accompanying us through life.” Her playlist is a family-friendly affair. “I hope my son continues to live happily and healthily every day, and to grow up to the beat of his own drum,” she says. So it’s no surprise there are tracks like “Yi-Pee Ya-Ya”, an adaptation of the classic nursery rhyme “She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain”. “I was stunned when I first discovered this album [Bossa Zoo by Bossa Baby & Stella Huang]. The nursery rhymes are still adorable, but they sound brilliant so adults can enjoy them too.” The turn of the year is time for reflection, a sentiment felt in Lala’s own track “Prototype”, included in the playlist to ease you into the mood. “Although we may feel like another year has flown by, in the midst of it there have still been so many events and changes that we never stopped to appreciate,” she says. “I think it’s a very suitable song during this period; relax, still yourself, breathe, let things go and take this opportunity to give yourself a rest.” Finally, she shares a parting message for listeners and loved ones: “I wish everyone a very auspicious Year of the Tiger. Keep your heads held high.”
