Emotional intimacy comes to the club via Melbourne duo Kllo, merging Chloe Kaul’s unhurried vocals with her cousin Simon Lam’s slow-burn production. Evoking the late-night torch songs of The xx and Portishead, Kllo use flickering beats and wraithlike samples as a sparse backdrop for pining, purring electronic ballads. The dance influence proves more pronounced in “Virtue”, while Kaul continues to develop her voice, edging into airy pop on “Cursed” and smouldering R&B on “Sense”. Kaul and Lam both pursued solo work between their 2017 debut album, Backwater, and 2020’s Maybe We Could, returning with a fuller and more grounded sound.
