The world of schlager has many solo stars, but few embody its jolly, communal spirit as emphatically as Kastelruther Spatzen. Norbert Rier has led the group since the late ’70s, although the list of band members past and present is almost as long as their dizzying discography, only adding to their characteristic, singalong cheer. Named after their hometown in the mountains of South Tyrol, where they still host a huge annual festival, the group rose to fame for catchy, brass-led Volksmusik anthems with romantic sentiments, Alpine settings—and a yodel or two for good measure.
