Jewel Essentials

When Jewel Kilcher broke through in the mid-‘90s, her unique biography turned heads: Raised in Alaska, she had lived in a van in San Diego while trying to launch her career. But it was her supple, pixieish voice and emotionally charged songs that drew people in. Jewel's guilelessness and vocal quirks—that coo could morph into a yodel—set early tunes like the anguished, strummy “Who Will Save Your Soul” apart from the era's coffeehouse fare. She subsequently channelled her flair for poetry into lush pop ballads like “Standing Still” and fizzy dance tracks like “Stand”, then found her groove in modern country.
