DJ and producer Jax Jones put out a mission statement on his breakthrough single “House Work”—making ‘light work’ of a dance-pop banger by pairing a hook from Chicago hip-house innovator Mike Dunn with MNEK’s soulful voice. The South Londoner’s skill at balancing his love of club music and a chart sensibility has taken him frequently to the business end of charts, and brought the best out of an extensive list of collaborators. Signature hit “You Don’t Know Me” tweaks a Booka Shade sample and adds a sassy RAYE vocal, a UK garage-inspired beat powers Years & Years hook-up “Play” and on “This Is Real”, Ella Henderson combines with piano breakdowns and hand claps to euphoric effect. “Tequila” with Martin Solveig and RAYE (again) is another club-ready single with pounding production—that never takes itself too seriously.
