Jamie xx Essentials

Beyond his quiet, inscrutable exterior, London producer, songwriter and DJ Jamie xx has the soul of a hard-raving true believer. There were signs of this dichotomy early on; from the moment Wandsworth-based schoolfriends The xx first unveiled a sound big on heavy-lidded 3am minimalism (“Angels”,“Crystalline”) and undergirded by the erstwhile Jamie Smith’s sampler-playing instrumentation and subtle, dubstep–adjacent atmospherics. Yet, 2015’s debut solo record In Colour—laterally born from whole-cloth remixing and production work with Radiohead, Drake and the late, great Gil Scott Heron—represented both a pronounced levelling up and an unabashed march towards the dance floor. Newest track “Idontknow” is the latest embodiment of this nocturnal spirit: a brooding, club-quaking frenzy of bass throbs, twisted vocal snatches and a muscular central drum line that sounds like Afrobeat pioneer Tony Allen dosed up with approximately 300 espressos. It's always the quiet ones.
