Is singer Jamie Lidell a left-of-centre pop star or an electronica maverick? That depends on which Lidell project you're talking about. In the late '90s, he formed Super Collider with techno producer Cristian Vogel, and the duo chopped R&B grooves into jittery IDM. Going solo in 2002, Lidell reinvented himself a soul man in the vein of greats like Prince and Stevie Wonder, inspired by not only their vocal chops but also their adventurousness in the studio. Despite the fact that he now cooks up slick and sumptuous funk, Lidell has never abandoned his experimental edge.
