Harrison Birtwistle Essentials

Arguably the most prominent British composer of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Harrison Birtwistle boldly drew upon mythological sources in creating forward-looking orchestral music and operas infused with gripping theatricality. Born in Accrington in 1934, he was encouraged to pursue music by his mother, who bought him a clarinet at age seven. He was taken with 20th-century avant-garde music, and in the early 1960s he began composing, steadily establishing himself in classical circles. He achieved national fame in 1995 when a performance of his saxophone concertante Panic was aired live on the BBC and initiated outrage from listeners unfamiliar with current trends in classical music. He worked up until his death in 2022 at age 87, firmly ensconced in music history.
