Glenn Frey Essentials

Along with his Eagles songwriting partner Don Henley, Glenn Frey created some of the most memorable, intimate and sing-able songs of the ‘70s. Their unique chemistry defined the Southern California sound, allowing country and rock fans to share a beer. He turned hard lessons about love and life into tender songs that ripped your heart out (“New Kid in Town,” “Lyin' Eyes”). His cool vocal delivery matched his songwriting prowess, able to set scenes that bordered on cinematic. It's a skill he carried well into his solo career on hits like “Smuggler's Blues” and “You Belong to the City”—the latter famously interpolated by JAY Z on 1998's “The City Is Mine”—illustrating Frey's wide range of influence that continues to spread far beyond country, rock, indie, pop and folk.
