Duke Dumont Essentials

Colossal bass drops, abundant hands-in-the-air moments, diva-grade vocal runs with enough harmonious power to shatter glass; while other dance acts may be wary of certain blockbusting ‘90s house signifiers, London-born DJ and producer Duke Dumont’s default setting is a kind of joyous, technicolour bombast. This is not to say that the former Adam Dyment—a coveted pop remixer whose approach is best distilled in the tensile synth stabs and pure R&B harmonies of 2013 breakthrough “Need U (100%)”—ever skimps on emotion or sheer songcraft. “Ocean Drive” (the centrepiece of debut record Duality) drips noir imagery and lush instrumentation, Ebeneezer link-up “Inhale” pivots to glossy, high-potency hip hop and “Therapy” is an exultant, piano-driven tribute to the transportive power of the dance floor.
