Don Cherry Essentials

The bebop era had the duo of Diz and Bird. In the late-'50s and early-‘60s avant-garde, the frontline team-up to beat was this trumpeter's blistering union with saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Due to that inspired work, Cherry was a sought-after collaborator for other venturesome saxophonists of the era (including John Coltrane and Steve Lacy). And when Cherry got a chance to lead his own sessions for Blue Note, he showed a facility for long-form intensity. This playlist introduces you to his iconic early works, as well as his subsequent engagement with pop textures and non-Western traditions.
