Dennis Brown Essentials

Dennis Brown made reggae music that took its time, blissfully nodding forward like a slow walk on a cool summer day. On 1970's "No Man Is an Island"—a debut single recorded when he was only 12 years old—Brown espoused wisdom well beyond his years in a voice that was both tender and sweet. "Money in My Pocket", from two years later, is filled with yearning, but even here Brown's voice suggests a wistful sort of optimism. The dubby and political "Here I Come" has the same effect. It's not for nothing that Bob Marley once named this king of lovers rock as his favourite singer.
