Even as a sideman, bebop great Bud Powell rarely tempers his fast hands and upper-register acrobatics. His solo on J.J. Johnson's tricky “Mad Bebop” is an explosion of climbing and descending runs, and his improvisations on the Charlie Parker romp “Buzzy” echo Bird's stabbing lines. His comping is equally busy: On Dexter Gordon's muscular “Scrapple From the Apple”, he fills in the cracks with a variety of sharp, harmonic twists.
