Barkaa: Influences

“My music taste was very influenced by my mother and my older brothers and sisters,” Barkaa tells Apple Music about the songs that inspire her, and her music. “When mum was at home from work, we’d listen to a lot of Tracy Chapman, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Coloured Stone, Tiddas, Midnight Oil and uncle Archie Roach.” When her mum wasn’t home, though, it was all hip-hop. “After school, our household would be filled with hip-hop from 2Pac, DMX, Eminem, D12, 50 Cent, Lil’ Kim, Eve, Queen Latifah,” she adds, but notes that she was just as obsessed with Britney Spears. The Malyangapa and Barkindji rapper’s handpicked playlist delves into all the songs that take her back to her childhood and led to the sound she’s known for today. 2Pac is a particular standout: “I used to play Pac repeatedly in my Discman and on my CD player with one busted speaker. It was the soundtrack to my adolescence.” Explore her playlist here.
