At Home With Shirley Manson: The Playlist

“I’m like a limpet,” Garbage lead singer Shirley Manson says about keeping the seminal alt-rockers together for almost 30 years. “I won’t let it go. I worked with very pragmatic, easy, kind of laidback people, and I'm not laidback. I pushed this band forward and they hold me back, and that's a really good marriage.” In her At Home With interview with Zane Lowe, Manson opened up about what she’s learned from navigating the music industry, adhering to the principles of her “great teacher” Patti Smith and setting up space in Palm Springs with her bandmates to record their seventh studio album No Gods No Masters. Fresh off the LP's release, Manson shared an exclusive Apple Music playlist featuring modern female artists who inspire her—represented here with the likes of Arlo Parks, Jehnny Beth, Tkay Maidza and Rapsody, highlighted here with the track “12 Problems”. “What an amazing spirit and visionary,” she says. “I admire the way she's conducted herself in a very hungry industry. I feel like she’s really pure, really strong, and she's not going to be sold for cheap, either. She's not for sale.”
