Music clearly means an awful lot to Shane Meadows. In the director’s work, the tunes are always as perfectly cast as the acting talent—whether he’s commissioning original pieces from PJ Harvey for The Virtues, adding thrilling period detail to the This Is England series or filming the music happen in his The Stone Roses: Made of Stone documentary. Lockdown has allowed him to indulge one of his great musical loves: making mixtapes. “Back in the day, me and my mates would make each other cassette mixtapes, and I still to this day find listening to other people’s ‘home-brewed’ compilations the best way to discover new tunes, or fall back in love with ones I’d forgotten,” he tells Apple Music. Stretching from the exquisite ’60s West Coast psychedelia of Love to Loyle Carner’s modern-day Brit-hop, Meadows’ own playlist for Apple Music’s At Home With series promises a fantastic journey of discovery and rediscovery: “This is a little homage to those eclectic mixtapes we used to make in the ’80s, baby!”
