Berlin’s Anja Schneider helped kick off a new era in dance music when she cofounded the Mobilee label alongside Ralf Kollmann in 2005. With early releases, she honed a springy fusion of minimal techno and deep house that drew inspiration from the city’s 24-hour club culture. What has long distinguished Schneider’s music is its contemplative side: On tracks like 2015’s fan favourite “Dubmission”, sombre keys and atmospheric effects offer a dreamy counterbalance to the driving groove. She loves the thrumming pianos of classic house, yet her minor-key tones are as introspective as they are euphoric. In 2017, she launched a new label, Sous Music, with the release of SoMe. That record’s home-listening focus and diverse collection of styles—including downbeat and drum 'n' bass—signalled her refusal to be tied to any one context.
