Is Anderson East an R&B artist, an Americana troubadour or something else entirely? Listening to the Alabaman singer/songwriter slather his soulful vocals all over the Stax-indebted stomp of “Satisfy Me”, the first choice would seem correct. But when the easy-rolling “Devil In Me”, another track from his 2015 major-label debut, evokes images of a modern-day version of The Band, the Americana option sure seems convincing. And when East inhabits the spare, piano-led, elegiac ballad “Cabinet Door” with a soft, sorrowful croon, the impulse is to tick the “something else entirely” box.
