Rock, alt-country and folk come together in 49 Winchester’s earthy Americana sound. The sextet first got together as teens in the tiny Virginian town of Castlewood in the 2000s, growing together both personally and musically over the next decade. The group debuted in 2014 with a self-titled album, mixing stripped-down acoustic tunes and gritty country rockers. Across their next few records, the band maintained the same musical core, including gorgeous, Eagles-worthy harmonies, but especially by the time of 2022’s Fortune Favors the Bold, they had pushed the needle more toward the rock end of the dial. And as a funky 2023 cover of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” shows, 49 Winchester always have a few tricks up their collective sleeve.
