Pickers Radio With Charlie Worsham

Nashville is often associated with superstar artists, thanks in large part to its place as the epicenter of country, bluegrass and Americana music. It’s a lesser-known group, though, that provides the backbone for the city’s bustling music industry: Nashville’s vibrant community of studio musicians and recording professionals. It’s all in a day’s work for these pickers, performers and producers, who day in and day out lend their talent and time to some of the biggest names in the game. Now you, too, can go behind the scenes with some of Nashville’s finest music makers with Pickers Radio, hosted by acclaimed country and bluegrass star Charlie Worsham. “I’ve seen songwriters get this spotlight in recent years and that makes me happy,” Worsham tells Apple Music. “But to get to be a part of shining that spotlight on the musicians, and on the players and the producers and engineers, is something that I don’t take lightly and I’m very excited about.” Across 12 episodes, Worsham will offer an insider’s look at the nuts and bolts of making great music, doing so alongside renowned guests like Emmylou Harris, Bryan Sutton, Vince Gill and Jerry Douglas. Worsham is a world-class singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, with a dynamic solo career—his most recent project is 2021’s Sugarcane EP—and experience playing alongside artists like Old Crow Medicine Show, Dierks Bentley and Eric Church. His stacked résumé makes him the perfect musical tour guide, as he taps into his bottomless well of musical knowledge to share tips, insight and more than a handful of entertaining, “only in Nashville” stories. “I was hoping to eventually get to do something like this, where I can share all of these great stories I hear in control rooms across town back in Nashville,” he says. “Because my favourite people on Earth, and most of my buddies, are musicians, and most of my hang time with my friends is 1 to 2 pm, between session blocks. One of my favourite things about all these folks is that they have the best stories.” This isn’t Worsham’s first radio rodeo, as he tested out his on-air chops with a monthly one-hour radio show for famed Nashville station WSM, home of the Grand Ole Opry. That project, the Air Castle Community Hour, was a primary inspiration for Pickers Radio, as it celebrated the collaboration and connection that make Nashville’s music community so special. He’ll do that and then some on Pickers Radio, a must-listen for musicians and music fans alike. “Nashville is continuing to carry that banner for full bands meeting up in a room together and recording within three hours, sometimes two or three songs even,” Worsham says. “And it’s not an overdub. This is drums, bass, guitar, steel, fiddle, acoustic. It’s a really cool thing that Nashville does that really, to my knowledge, nobody else does.”
