About Tom Jones

Pop singer Tom Jones became a full-throated sex symbol with a string of hits in the 1960s, the beginning of an enduring career with sales of tens of millions of records worldwide, 36 Top 40 hits in the UK (19 in the US), and a slew of awards and honours. • Jones won Best New Artist at the Grammys in 1966, a Golden Globe in 1970 and a pair of Brit Awards in 2000 and 2003. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006. • After a brief stint fronting the Welsh beat group Tommy Scott and the Senators, Jones began recording as a solo artist in 1964. His second single, 1965’s “It’s Not Unusual”, reached No. 1 in the UK and No. 10 in the US. • Following three more Top 40 hits that year, including “What’s New Pussycat?”, Jones sang the title theme for the 1966 James Bond film Thunderball. Jones’ eighth single in 1966, “Green, Green Grass of Home”, hit No. 1 in the UK. • Jones’ first No. 1 album came with 1968’s Delilah. Though eight subsequent albums made the Top 40, Jones wouldn’t top the albums charts again until Reload in 1999. • As his popularity ebbed in the mid-’70s, Jones tried his hand at acting in the ABC TV movie Pleasure Cove in 1979. He also guested on Fantasy Island in 1984. He later appeared in the 1996 film Mars Attacks and played himself on an episode of The Simpsons. • By the late ’80s, Jones’s musical profile had risen again, thanks to the 1988 No. 2 hit “A Boy from Nowhere” and his collaboration with Art of Noise on a sex-drenched 1989 cover of Prince’s “Kiss”, which reached No. 5 in the UK and cracked the Top 20 in the US. • Jones’ resurgence continued when he covered Randy Newman’s “You Can Leave Your Hat On” for the 1997 comedy The Full Monty. • The 1999 album Reload features duets on cover songs with artists including Van Morrison, The Pretenders and The Cardigans, along with the original song “Sex Bomb”. The album went quadruple platinum in the UK and won Jones a Brit Award for Best British Male. • Jones’s most recent LP, 2015’s Long Lost Suitcase, was his forty-first studio album. It went Top 20 in the UK.
