Greek pianist Theodosia Ntokou is best known as a protégée of Martha Argerich, with whom she has recorded a four-hand piano arrangement of Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony (1808) for Warner Classics. Born and raised on the island of Rhodes, Ntokou undertook the long round trip to Athens for weekly piano lessons before moving there at the age of 16. Further studies took her to Berlin to work with László Simon and New York with Oxana Yablonskaya. Her most important musical encounter followed in 2009 when she auditioned for Argerich, who took Ntokou under her wing and became her inspiration and chief mentor. In addition to the engaging duo performance of the Pastoral Symphony, Ntokou’s 2020 Beethoven album includes her own account of the composer’s Tempest Piano Sonata (1802), where the passion and character of her playing, its freshness and sense of style, bode well for future projects.
