Formed in the mid-2010s in Oakland, California by a quartet of musicians who already had other bands but wanted to recapture the angular, anarchic version of post-punk as played by Essential Logic, X-Ray Spex, and early Fall, the World featured Amber Sermeno on bass and vocals, Elyse Schrock on drums and vocals, guitarist Andy Jordan, and Alexa Pantalone on bongos. Setting the band apart from the usual post-punks was the dual saxophone attack provided by Pantalone and Stanley Martinez. Their sound caught the ear of U.K. label Upset the Rhythm, which released their first record, a four-song EP titled Managerial Material, in early 2016. First World Record, their debut LP, was issued by Upset the Rhythm in late 2017. ~ Tim Sendra
