About Tennis Club

Born out of singer/guitarist Wilson Hernandez's bedroom compositions, Tennis Club took their surfy garage pop songs to especially lo-fi places, evoking both the teenage innocence of the Beach Boys and the reverb-heavy production of some late-2000s indie acts. The band merged dreamy sonics and melodic, '60s-inspired pop songwriting on their self-titled 2017 debut. Tennis Club formed in the late 2010s in the relatively tiny town of Joplin, Missouri. Songwriter Hernandez was writing and recording songs on his own and eventually enlisted the help of friends Sean O'Dell on drums and Justin Akin on bass to fill out his fuzzy garage pop tunes. Elements of '60s surf legends met with the dirty production of self-produced material by band like Wavves, the Beets, and Crystal Stilts. An eight-song self-titled EP was released in 2017 and the new band toured. After getting into an argument after a show at South By Southwest the following year, however, Hernandez cut ties with Akin. Tehya Deardorff took over on bass, joining the band for the recording of their 2019 album Pink. ~ Fred Thomas
