Romanian producer Sublee creates trippy, hypnotic tech-house in the "Rominimal" subgenre, sending the listener on a deep journey into previously unexplored reaches. Born Ștefan Nicu in Bucharest, he debuted in 2012 as part of the groups Marsomatic700 (with Mihai Popescu) and Stedi (with Vlad Dinu); each outfit released just one single. The Sublee alias first appeared in 2015 with the single "Just Speak" on Nil, showcasing an already fully-formed sound full of the typical tics of Rominimal, but with its own warm groove. His manifesto is to use sound to tell a story, allowing the listener to discover previously unknown places and emotions. He released a small but steady output, putting out a couple of 12"s every year -- notably 2018's "Irealis" EP on Meander -- and collaborating with Audiotheque, Cristi Cons, and Simone Adinolfi. He also put out two full-length albums: 2016's Ideepsum on Metereze and the following year's superb Their Mind on Baumbaum. 2019 was particularly busy, as he released three EPs including "Moving Spaces" on Morning People and "Destuldebussy" on rising Romanian imprint Playedby. ~ John D.
