About Sergio Bittencourt

The son of Jacob do Bandolim, Sérgio Bittencourt was a journalist by profession, but wrote successes of Brazilian popular music (and would certainly have left several other important songs had he not died so precociously), such as the wonderful "Modinha," winner of the 1968 O Brasil Canta o Rio Festival, interpreted and recorded by Taiguara. In the II Festival de Música Popular Brasileira (Festival of Brazilian Popular Music, TV Record, September and October 1966), he won fourth place with his "Canção de Não Cantar" through MPB-4's rendition. His biggest hit, though, "Naquela Mesa," a tribute to his father recorded by Elizeth Cardoso on her LP Preciso Aprender a Ser Só (1972). ~ Alvaro Neder
