Seattle's Pretty Girls Make Graves named themselves after a Smiths song, but any similarities between the two bands ends there. Formed in 2001, and signed to influential labels Lookout Records and Matador, the group embodied the insouciant, knowing, and sophisticated state of post-riot-grrl punk in the oughts. Combing the bounce, melody, and occasional electronic elements of new wave with the restless angularity of post-punk, the band worked with a varied palette and created atmospheric songs with hooks and dramatic build-ups, featuring Andrea Zollo's pretty but feisty vocals. After three critically acclaimed albums, the band broke up in 2007.
