About Meta4

Meta4 (DJ/producer Ian Menzies) spun jazz-inflected dance tracks, by such acts as Jazzanova, Fila Brazillia, and Transglobal Underground, for several years before signing a deal with Nettwerk to produce a series of compilations called Geosonic Grooves. Nettwerk released the first volume in 2001; the mix album featured tracks by Delerium, Nick Holder, and Legion of Green Men, in addition to one of Menzies' Meta4 productions. In the early '90s, before he was known as Meta4, Menzies lived in Toronto and wrote feature articles about popular music artists for publications such as Canadian Musician and Chart. He moved to Vancouver in 1995 and helped found Mo Funk Records, an important West Coast acid jazz label at the time. Around this time, Menzies began DJing more often, eventually adopting the Meta4 alias. In 1997, he became the A&R director for Wicklow Records, a BMG-distributed world music label. This experience broadened his musical interests beyond acid jazz to include more world sounds such as those showcased on the eclectic Geosonic Grooves series he produced for Nettwork beginning in 2001. ~ Jason Birchmeier
