About Maarten Van Der Grinten

In the artist’s words: Describe one of your earliest musical memories in detail. One of the 1st tracks I remember from my father's taperecorder was the Beatles' Maxwell's Silver Hammer. I vividly remember the clingy anvil sound. Soon I found myself playing my selfmade drums to all the pop on colored cassette tapes of my mother. What are your top 3 all-time favorite albums on Apple Music, and why? Why did you choose these three albums in particular? Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Undercurrent ROSALÍA, MOTOMAMI Jim Hall and Sonny Rollins are the masters of improvised melody. Bill Evans the king of the harmony on jazz standards. Undercurrent is the perfect music you can zoom into and out of. Rosalía is something else, a new light of creativity & eclecticism. Find a song of yours on Apple Music that you love and tell us what makes it special. Tell us why you chose this song. “You Do Something to Me” My collaboration with fellow Jesse was a very natural match. We both studied with the great Wim Overgaauw, sharing a common jazz language. The mysterious intro and the "ape eats banana" quote of Hendrix's Voodoo Chile on the lyric Voodoo are catchy. What’s one of the most memorable moments in your career so far? A vey memorable moment for me was to play a solo cadenza to a full house audience in the big hall of the prestigious Concertgebouw in my tune Requiem for J.W. Overgaauw and the end of the performance with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw. Is there anything left on your bucket list as an artist or band? Having a huge crowd singing your song spontaneously would be a dream come true.
