About JT The Goon

Even though he's not as well known as Wiley or Skepta, producer JT the Goon (Joe Taylor) is still an important figure in the U.K. grime scene. As a member of East London crew Slew Dem during the mid-2000s, Taylor co-produced the infamous "Gunman Riddim," which heavily utilized the "AMSFeedbackLead" preset of the Korg Triton synthesizer, making it one of the signature sounds of the grime genre. Following a hiatus of several years, JT the Goon re-emerged in 2012, issuing several free online EPs and making appearances at London club night Boxed. In early 2014, he released Twin Warriors, an EP of atmospheric, cinematic grime instrumentals on the Oil Gang label. This was shortly followed by Plume, a collaboration with Murlo, on the same label. Taylor co-founded grime trio Edgem along with Paul Boylan and Dullah Beatz, releasing the debut EP Secret Garden on their own Edgem Records in March of 2015, followed soon after by Terror Fortress. Goon Patrol arrived on Sulk Records in May of 2015, and JT's debut full-length, King Triton, arrived on Oil Gang at the end of the year, garnering critical acclaim from the underground dance music press. JT began 2016 with The Midnight EP (with Dullah Beatz) on Edgem Records, as well as Oil on Ice on Keysound Recordings. ~ Paul Simpson
