What hasn’t Johnny Marr achieved in his career? The Manchester native first rose to prominence as the guitarist for ’80s mope-rock merchants The Smiths, for whom he provided crisp, jangly riffs. After leaving the band in 1987, he diversified, becoming an in-demand sideman—he played with Talking Heads, The The and The Pretenders—and formed another band, the synth-heavy Electronic, with New Order’s Bernard Sumner. Marr’s good fortune continued in the following decades, as he later joined U.S. indie icons Modest Mouse for a few years, appearing on 2007’s We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, and Wakefield rock band The Cribs. For good measure, Marr then launched what would become a successful solo career—starting in 2013 with The Messenger—that emphasises his long-held affinity for glam rock, folk, punk and the poetic bent of Patti Smith.
