Johann Kuhnau

About Johann Kuhnau

German composer Johann Kuhnau (1660-1722) was one of the leading organists and pedagogues of the middle Baroque. Educated in Dresden, Kuhnau settled in Leipzig in the mid-1680s where he practiced law in addition to his musical activities. In 1701, Kuhnau was named to the position of Kantor at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and held it until his death in 1722, whereby he was replaced with Johann Sebastian Bach. Kuhnau's influence was wide, and though most of his music is lost, Kuhnau's Biblischen Historien-Sonaten (Biblical Sonatas, 1700) and dance suites for keyboard, in addition to some sacred cantatas, have survived.
