About Emile Waldteufel

French composer Émile Waldteufel was a master of the waltz. Among his most famous additions to this dance genre are Les Patineurs ("The Skaters", 1882), a wintry depiction of the Seine River that brought him international fame, and Estudiantina ("Band of Students", 1883), an arrangement of a melody by Paul Lacôme that would later become famous in the U.S. as the advertising jingle for Rheingold beer. Like the "Waltz King" Johann Strauss II, who had popularised the waltz before him, Waldteufel descended from a family of musicians: his mother, a pianist, studied with Hummel and met Haydn; both his father and brother were accomplished violinists. Born in 1837 in Strasbourg, Waldteufel made his name in Paris, where he was appointed court pianist to Empress Eugénie in 1865. From then on, he devoted himself entirely to composing dance music. As well as entertaining Parisian high society, his music was promoted in Britain by the Prince of Wales, future King Edward VII, who fell under the spell of his Manolo waltz (1874).
