About DJ Milkshake

After the breakup of Love Riot, Lisa Mathews and Mikel Gehl each found themselves transitioning into a new phase of their lives: parenthood. As a parent, Mathews found herself writing songs for her new daughter with her former bandmate Gehl, and with that, their songwriting partnership was reborn. The pair found the process liberating, and with the pressures of trying to write for a cooler, adult audience gone, they decided to start recording. Empowered by their mission to write quality rock music for children, they released their first album, Happy Songs, in 2002, followed quickly by Bottle of Sunshine in 2004. Following the success of their first two albums, the band was asked to contribute some music for kids television, which was something they were no strangers to with Love Riot (having had their music featured on the show Homicide: Life on the Streets). Milkshake has had their songs show up on Discovery Kids ’ ToddWorld, Nick Jr.’s Jack’s Big Music Show, and PBS Kids' Share the Earth Day series. In 2007, they released their third album, Play!, followed by their first DVD, Screen Play, which was released in 2008. A Great Day, Milkshake’s fourth album, was released in 2009 and earned the group a Grammy nomination for “Best Musical Album for Children.” ~ Gregory Heaney
