About Des'ree

British singer-songwriter Des’ree offered the world a bunch of great advice on her motivational 1994 smash “You Gotta Be”, a soothing earworm that made Billboard’s pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. • Des’ree was born in London to a Guyanese mother and a Bajan father. She spent three years of her childhood living in Barbados. • The singer’s 1992 debut album, Mind Adventures, yielded the Top 20 UK hit “Feel So High”. She appeared on Terence Trent D'Arby’s track “Delicate” (another Top 20 UK hit) in 1993. • “You Gotta Be” became her international breakthrough, reaching No. 5 in the US and helping her sophomore album, 1994’s I Ain't Movin’, sell more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. • Although she’s regarded as a one-hit wonder in the US, Des’ree fared much better in the UK. She managed six Top 40 hits—including two Top 10 singles—between 1992 and 2003, when she took a break from music to focus on naturopathy. • She returned to music in 2019 with her fifth album, A Love Story.
