About Colourmusic

Oklahoma's Colourmusic are a high-concept indie group based around the theory that music is visual, and that chords and notes are represented by hues of color. This philosophy, popularized by Isaac Newton, led Ryan Hendrix and Nick Turner to start the band in 2005 while attending Oklahoma State University in the small college town of Stillwater. They began creating EPs, starting with a red one and a yellow one, and drummer Cory Suter joined. For live shows, Colourmusic expanded to a quintet and included the Bells Are...'s Nick Ley and Colin Fleishacker performing in costumes and body paint that coincided with album themes. Once fellow Oklahoman Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips caught wind of their theatrics, he invited Colourmusic to open up for his band in Oklahoma City. The next release color was predetermined when Hendrix decided to merge together the material from their red and yellow EPs to make the orange 2008 full-length f, monday, orange, february, venus, lunatic, 1 or 13. After a European tour, the group signed to Warner Bros. subsidiary Great Society and took a detour from standard shades for My _____ Is Pink, which was released in May of 2011. The band moved over to indie label Memphis Industries for third album May You Marry Rich, which saw release in 2014. ~ Jason Lymangrover
