About CeeLo Green

Singer and rapper CeeLo Green was among the pioneers of Southern hip-hop in the 1990s as part of the group Goodie Mob before landing massive pop hits in the 2000s on his own and with Gnarls Barkley, Green’s collaboration with Brian “Danger Mouse” Burton. • Green got his start singing in church as a kid and was 16 when Goodie Mob formed in 1991. The foursome was part of Dungeon Family, an Atlanta hip-hop collective that also included OutKast. • Goodie Mob, with Green singing, appeared on two tracks on OutKast’s 1994 debut. They released their own first album, Soul Food, in 1995. • After working on Goodie Mob’s third album, 1999’s World Party, Green left the group for a solo career that got off to a fitful start. Though he sang on Santana’s smash 1999 album Supernatural, Green’s first two solo albums, in 2002 and ’04, didn’t blow up the way he (or his record label) had hoped. • Green and Burton formed Gnarls Barkley after meeting on tour. Their first single, “Crazy”, was a huge hit in 2006 that spent nine straight weeks at No. 1 on the UK singles chart and seven consecutive weeks at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Crazy” won a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance in 2007. Gnarls Barkley’s debut LP, St. Elsewhere, won a Grammy the same year for Best Alternative Music Album. • After Gnarls Barkley’s 2008 album The Odd Couple, Green resumed his solo career in 2010 with the album Lady Killer and the gleefully vulgar kiss-off single “F**k You”, which he first released online. Co-written by Bruno Mars, the song became an international hit, won a Grammy for Best Urban/Alternative Performance and was named the best single of 2010 on several high-profile year-end lists. • Green has amassed a considerable number of movie and TV credits, including the 1999 film comedy Mystery Men, the TV series Parenthood and his own docu-comedy series CeeLo Green’s The Good Life. He was also a coach on the first three seasons of the TV music competition The Voice starting in 2011.
