About Cardiacs

The U.K.'s Cardiacs combined the D.I.Y. attitude of the early punk years with an affection for progressive rock acts such as Gong and Gentle Giant. They released their full-length debut cassette in 1980, then sporadically self-released material throughout the decade, including Toy World in 1981. Their 1988 LP A Little Man and a House and the Whole World Window proved to be their biggest success, spawning the Top Ten indie chart track "Is This a Life." Though that success was short-lived, self-proclaimed admirers included Mike Patton and Damon Albarn, who arranged for Cardiacs to open shows for Blur in 1995. While recordings were few and far between, the band continued to tour until frontman Tim Smith suffered a heart attack and a stroke in 2008, leading to years of poor health. After he died on July 22, 2020, the group marked his funeral with the previously unreleased song "Vermin Mangle."
