About Betty Harris

Soul singer Betty Harris did not achieve the commercial success her talent deserved. Once a maid for Big Maybelle, with whom she once duetted on-stage, Harris signed to Jubilee and reached the R&B Top Ten with her version of "Cry to Me" (1963). She matured upon signing to the New Orleans outlet Sansu, where she recorded a series of exemplary Allen Toussaint songs that combined the Crescent City kick of Lee Dorsey with traces of uptown soul, as exemplified by "What a Sad Feeling," "I Don't Want to Hear It," and "What'd I Do Wrong." Paradoxically, the simpler ballad "Nearer to You" (1967) was Harris' only other hit. Following decades of inactivity, Harris recorded her first proper album, Intuition (2007). ~ Rovi Staff
