About Belinda Carlisle
After rising to fame with The Go-Go’s in the early 1980s, singer Belinda Carlisle established herself as a solo artist, releasing eight studio albums and scoring six Top 40 US singles. • Carlisle co-founded The Go-Go’s as a punk band in Los Angeles in 1978. The group soon gravitated to New Wave pop and debuted in 1981 with Beauty and the Beat, which reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. • When The Go-Go’s broke up in 1985 after three albums, Carlisle built on their success with her 1986 solo debut, Belinda. The album reached No. 13 in the US and yielded the No. 3 hit “Mad About You”. • She had a No. 1 hit the following year with “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” the first single from her 1987 album Heaven on Earth. The LP reached No. 4 in the UK and No. 13 in the US, where it went platinum. • Heaven on Earth produced two more US Top 10 singles in 1988: “I Get Weak” peaked at No. 2 (No. 10 in the UK) and “Circle in the Sand” reached No. 7 (No. 4 in the UK). • Though her commercial fortunes diminished in the US following Heaven on Earth, Carlisle continued to ring up hits in the UK, where she had 16 Top 40 songs after “Circle in the Sand”. • The Go-Go’s briefly reunited in 1994, and again in 2001, resulting in the band’s fourth album, 2001’s God Bless The Go-Go’s. • Amid occasional Go-Go’s tours, Carlisle continued releasing solo albums, though 1989’s Runaway Horses was her last to reach the US albums chart, peaking at No. 37. • Carlisle’s 2007 album Voila comprises covers of French pop songs and standards, which Carlisle sang in French. She took another unexpected turn on her next release, 2017’s Wilder Shores, which features Sikh chants set to music and mostly performed in Gurmukhi, a Punjabi dialect.
