About Band of Susans

Formed in New York City during the mid-1980s, Band of Susans did initially feature a trio of women all named Susan, but, within a few years, the line-up of the noise-rock ensemble was centered primarily on guitarist Robert Poss and bassist Susan Stenger. Drawing inspiration from avant-rock composers Glenn Branca and Rhys Chatham, the group, which for a time included Page Hamilton (later of Helmet), concerned itself with the sonic possibilities of its three-guitar configuration, often leaving out vocals or burying them deep in the mix. Although the act dissolved in ’96, Poss and Stenger have continued to perform together on various occasions.
