About Jimmy Durante

With a self-effacing grace, an unmistakable gruff voice, a crackling wit, and a prominent nose that earned him the nickname "Schnozzola," Jimmy Durante loomed over the 20th century. He began his career in the 1910s as a ragtime pianist, punctuating his band's raucous numbers with vaudevillian punchlines. By the 1930s, the affable Durante was a star on both stage and screen, in addition to having one of 1933's biggest hits with "Inka Dinka Doo." His version of CASABLANCA's "As Time Goes By" would become a cinematic staple, still spun decades after his death in 1980 at age 86.
